The Skilled Facilitator Teleclass Series - A Radical and Powerful Approach
A Radical and Powerful Approach to Non-Verbal Behavior in Groups
Everyone wants to be a facilitator: consultants, managers, even teachers. What is desperately needed is a common, practical reference for understanding facilitation in diverse professional settings. No one has done a better job than Roger Schwarz of synthesizing the major theoretical underpinnings and translating them into clear, usable guidelines for practitioners. Peter Senge

Many of our clients struggle to deal productively with non-verbal behavior – especially in groups. They see eyes rolling, shrugs, "knowing" glances – they hear sighs and sniffs – and, most of the time, they respond in ways that create unintended problems. Given the research and my experience, you probably do this too.
I've designed this teleclass to help you learn an approach to non-verbal behavior that minimizes defensiveness, maximizes learning for everyone, and builds trust.
On this teleclass, you'll learn the approach I take to directly and compassionately intervene on non-verbal behavior. This is an approach that holds you, and everyone you're working with accountable for their behavior and thoughts – without blaming or shaming – so that the group gets all the information on the table that's relevant to its work. This often contributes to dramatic improvements in a group's effectiveness.
The key difference between most approaches and mine is that they value feeling comfortable over learning and productivity. I flip things around. People accept my direct interventions on non-verbal behavior because they see significant payoff for their group – recognizing initially that it may feel uncomfortable.
The approach I teach in this teleclass is not for everyone. Some feel it's too direct, risky, unfair, rude or offensive – both to the user and the recipient. I honor that.
My clients feel it's one of the most valuable things I bring to the table. They often decide that the approach they were using – the approach that felt compassionate and appropriate – is more risky, unfair, rude and offensive than what I'm proposing. I think you may discover the same thing.
You will get enough information and personal experience with my approach to decide whether and how you want to apply it in your real world. If you decide the journey is worth it, I'll help you maximize your learning curve and minimize the challenges on your way.
My colleagues and I use the same approach I'll be teaching you. We have worked for 25 years to develop and apply this approach, and have learned what works and what doesn't. This approach is the basis for our two books: The Skilled Facilitator and The Skilled Facilitator Fieldbook.
What the Teleclass Will be Like
Your stories, opportunities and challenges will be the practice field. I'll share some key concepts – mostly via advance reading – and we'll quickly move into "clinic" mode, where we work together to make the material practical and meaningful for you.
We'll do all this in a fast-paced, focused way, and the class will be highly interactive. We're limiting participation to 12 people to ensure this, and the teleclass will be 90 minutes long.
There will be a short written assignment beforehand, as well as some prereading. This will help us focus, in the call, on your learning and your real situations.
If you can't attend, you can purchase a recording of the entire class. If you choose this option, you will still receive all the supporting materials and assignments.
I wish I had been exposed to Roger's approach in my early days - it gives anyone the skills and the courage to have challenging conversations meaningfully and productively. Thomas Zgambo, Ph.D.

We Will Cover the Following Content
The Challenges of Intervening on Non-Verbal Behavior. We’ll talk about the dilemmas that non-verbal behavior presents, and how typical approaches handle this dilemma counterproductively.
How and Why I Intervene on Non-Verbal Behavior. Early in the call, I’ll demonstrate the approach I take, and then we’ll unpack my reasoning. This will help you quickly identify your reactions to our approach – positive and negative.
Building Agreements about Intervening on Non-Verbal Behavior. The single most important intervention I make on Non-Verbal behavior is to build an agreement with others about whether and how I’ll do so. We’ll discuss the theory and practice of that here.
If you are still reading, I think you’ll find the teleclass quite valuable. I invite you to participate.
When you purchase the recording, you will receive:
- The advance assignment and course materials to help you get the most out of the teleclass.
- The digital recording of the teleclass. We will send you a link to download it (or, if you need it, ship you a CD recording), along with the materials above.
- The complete transcript of the call, if purchased.
